Direct dyes are water soluble and one of the oldest colours used due to its ease of application particularly in textiles and in paper manufacturing. Direct dyes also have application in other formulations where colouring is required. Direct dye is a class of dyestuff which is used directly onto the substrate in the alkaline or neutral bath. They create full shapes on linen and cotton without mordanting and can also be useful to silk, wool or rayon. Direct dyes have been previously widely used for the dyeing of the cellulose fibers, protein fibers, synthetic fibers and their blended fabric.
